Oreti Estate

Boyce Harries produces this coffee on a small farm – and still large by Kenyan standards – located in the Thika district.

Boyce’s family is originally from New Zealand, but has lived in Kenya since 1904, and Boyce is the fifth generation involved in the management of the Oreti estate. The estate is named after the Oreti Beach in New Zealand, where Boyce’s grandparents first met.

The coffee trees are cultivated in an area of 17 hectares, whose deep and volcanic soil, make it very fertile. On the Oreti farm, the coffee is entirely hand-picked, processed and exported – a very uncommon fact for the Kenyan coffee market, where usually, way too many, useless intermediaries are involved between the producer and the buyer.

This farm is also equipped with a kindergarten for the workers’ children and a dairy that provides milk to all the people who work there.

Beside the stunning sensory characteristics of this coffee, we were also enticed with the possibility of shortening the supply chain and giving the right value to all the people involved in every single step of the production process.
